Chevy SSR transforms from a fully enclosed roadster to a convertible in less than 30 seconds. It’s the result of a power-retractable hardtop — the only system of its kind on a pickup-styled vehicle. Here’s how it works: Press a button. Roof panels stack and store in a bulkhead behind the passenger compartment allowing the cargo capacity to remain unchanged with the top up or down. Fully lowered, the top is enclosed by a hard tonneau cover for a clean appearance. The LS2 engine features a race-proven coil-near-plug ignition system operated by an Engine Control Module with 32 MHz of processing speed and one megabyte of flash-programmable memory. The result is serious power for each spark plug. This Corvette-based V8 is rated at 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque with the available TREMEC T-56 close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission. The horsepower rating is 395 with the heavy-duty electronically controlled automatic transmission. Bottom line, this powerplant delivers more than 300 lb.-ft. of its available torque starting from just under 1000 rpm.
